Leeches are not caught from the water: activate the Island 2 Forest task, lower the camera, and collect the small pickups from the ground near the NPC and surrounding Forest area. The supported v1.0.x task count is three Leeches, but the current HUD counter should always decide after a patch. Return all requested pickups to the Forest NPC to receive Leech Bait. That story bait, rather than Beginner Boss Lure, is used for Giant Piranha.

Start the task before searching

Speak with the Forest NPC and finish the available dialogue before expecting the Leech search to work correctly. Player reports connect incomplete dialogue with missing pickups, although this is not a developer-confirmed spawn rule. Check that the active task counter is visible before beginning a full sweep.

The strongest versioned evidence supports a three-item objective, and HUD examples include states such as 0/3, 1/3, and 2/3. A separate claim of five Leeches is lower-confidence and may be outdated. Do not continue searching for an unsupported total once the live objective says the hand-in is ready.

Search the ground, not the water

Start close to the task NPC, angle the camera down, and move slowly enough to notice the interaction prompt. The pickups are very small and can disappear visually against grass, paths, vegetation, and nearby clutter. The demonstrated search remains on land around the NPC area rather than using a rod or casting into the lake.

Use a compact sweep pattern so that missed ground is easy to identify. Check the grass, the Forest floor, path edges, building edges, nearby objects, and the central task area shown by the route. Exact fixed coordinates are not supported, so treat these as search zones rather than guaranteed spawn points.

• Finish the NPC dialogue and confirm the task is active.
• Begin beside the NPC instead of at the shoreline.
• Lower the camera toward the ground.
• Sweep grass, paths, vegetation, clutter, and building edges.
• Watch for the interaction prompt more than for a large model.

Read the counter as you search

Treat the task counter as a progress log, not just an end-of-quest message. After each interaction prompt succeeds, check whether the display moves from 0/3 to 1/3 or from 1/3 to 2/3 in the supported build. A changing counter confirms that the small ground object was a quest Leech and that the task is recording it.

If you see something on the ground but the counter does not change, do not invent a second pickup type or assume the total has increased. Return to the task area, confirm that the Forest conversation is complete, and make another slow pass with the camera down. The sources support this verification sequence but do not establish a hidden timer or fixed refresh trigger.

The video routes repeatedly return to the NPC area, grass, paths, vegetation, and nearby clutter. That repetition is useful because it reduces the chance of skipping a tiny object, not because those shots prove permanent coordinates. Search the demonstrated zones methodically while allowing the current interaction prompt and HUD to confirm every result.

Hand in the Leeches

Return the collected Leeches to the same Forest task NPC when the live counter reaches its requested total. The NPC converts the task pickups into Leech Bait for the story encounter. Beginner Boss Lure sold by the shop does not replace this quest item.

Do not use the bait until your combat loadout is ready, because the Giant Piranha sequence follows. The source supports preparing weapons and health before activation. After the fight, the distinctive tail or trophy must be returned to complete Dinnertime, so the initial Leech hand-in and the later Boss trophy hand-in are separate steps.

Keep every quest item distinct

The sequence contains three different object roles: ground Leeches, the Leech Bait reward, and the distinctive Giant Piranha tail or trophy. The Leeches are collected for the NPC, while Leech Bait is the item used to begin the Boss encounter. The later trophy is collected only after the fight and returned to finish Dinnertime.

Beginner Boss Lure belongs outside that story chain even though its name can sound relevant. It is a shop item and cannot replace the Leech Bait created from the task pickups. If Giant Piranha does not follow an attempted summon, verify the item name and the NPC exchange before blaming the ground search.

This separation also gives you clear checkpoints when diagnosing a stalled run. A live collection counter means you are still finding Leeches; Leech Bait in hand means the collection exchange succeeded; and the distinctive trophy belongs to the post-fight hand-in. Do not treat ordinary bait, ordinary catches, or the earlier ground objects as substitutes between those stages.

If Leeches do not appear

First return to the NPC and exhaust the dialogue, then inspect the active task counter. Rescan the nearby ground with the camera lowered because a small pickup can be hidden by vegetation or clutter. This is the least disruptive check and matches both written reports and the demonstrated search route.

If the counter remains stuck, return to the main menu, load the latest save, and search the ground again. One player report says reloading the previous save was required, while other reports say finishing dialogue did not always repair the state. These are community workarounds, not guaranteed refresh mechanics.

Do not claim that leaving and re-entering Island 2 always forces new Leeches to spawn. The available evidence does not establish a reliable island-reset rule, exact coordinates, or a universal respawn timer. To be confirmed: any changed quantity or refresh behavior must be read from the current task counter and tested in the current build.

Use the troubleshooting evidence carefully

The missing-Leech reports come from players rather than a developer-authored refresh specification. Completing the dialogue is a sensible first check, and loading a save helped in at least one reported case, but neither action is proven to repair every state. Present them as ordered troubleshooting steps and stop once the live counter begins responding again.

Likewise, the three-Leech total has stronger current v1.0.x support than the conflicting five-Leech claim. That confidence label does not turn three into a permanent rule for every future patch. If the active objective changes, preserve the discrepancy as To be confirmed and follow the number displayed by the current game.

Quick completion check

A correct run has an active Forest task, ground pickups collected to the live target, and Leech Bait received from the NPC. No fishing rod is needed for the pickups themselves, and ordinary shop bait is not a substitute. Once the exchange succeeds, prepare before using the one story item that leads into Giant Piranha.
